Mommy’s Good Old Chocolate Cake Recipe With An Easy Chocolate Buttercream Frosting


Umm.. chocolate cake! The one that tingles the mind and gushes all the happy hormones out of the body. Eeep… I know how much all of us; count in kids, parents, elders, everyone love chocolate cake the most. While there are a number of recipes available online for making the fluffiest chocolate cake ever, I swear by this one.

The best chocolate cake recipe ever? How can I say that?

This recipe is right out of my mother’s little diary (the diary that she kept hidden all this while and I got to know about it while I was trying out all the amazing chocolate cake recipes available online.)

Well, this one recipe, without a shadow of a doubt is exactly what you should try. I know it because even a single bite of this decadent, moist, yummy chocolate cake with all that chocolaty chocolate frosting will leave you licking the spoon to ecstasy.

The good thing about this cake is: The batter can be prepared in a single bowl. Yes, so you no more have to juggle bowls to store dry and wet ingredients separately.

My little secret: Use a dash of espresso powder to elevate the flavours of the chocolate.

Oh! I can smell all that chocolate already.

Without further ado, let’s get into the recipe.

Mommy's Good Old Chocolate Cake

  • Difficulty: easy

For the chocolate cake:
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 3/4 cup cocoa powder (unsweetened)
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 and a half tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp espresso powder
  • 1 cup milk or buttermilk (You can even use almond milk or coconut milk)
  • Half cup vegetable, or coconut oil (melted)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water

For the chocolate buttercream cake frosting:

  • 1 and a half cups butter (softened or at room temperature)
  • 1 cup cocoa powder
  • 5 cups icing sugar
  • Half cup milk
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • Half tsp espresso powder
  1. Preheat oven to 350º F and prepare one or two cake pans (any shape) by buttering and lightly flouring. I used cocoa powder to flour my baking pans.
For the chocolate cake:
  1. In a bowl add flour, sugar, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda, salt and espresso powder and combine by stirring well. Keep it aside.
  2. Now, add milk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla to the flour mixture and mix them together until well combined (I use a hand blender. You can use whatever you like.)
  3. Now, carefully add boiling water to the cake batter until well combined.
  4. Pour cake batter evenly into the prepared cake pan. Bake it for 30-35 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in the center of the cake, comes out clean.
  5. Remove from the oven and allow to cool for about 10- 15 minutes, remove from the pan and cool completely.

You can even cover the cake with buttercream cake frosting! I am mentioning the recipe here.

For the chocolate buttercream cake frosting:

  1. Add butter to a large bowl along with cocoa powder and cream them together until well-combined.
  2. Add sugar and milk to cocoa mixture and make sure there are no lumps.
  3. Add vanilla extract and espresso powder and mix them well.
  4. In case the frosting appears dry, add milk, until it reaches the right consistency.
  5. In case it appears too wet, add more icing sugar until it reaches the right consistency.


The cake batter will be very thin because we are adding boiling water. But don’t worry, the result will be the most delicious and moist chocolate cake you have ever tasted!
